At Stevenson Elementary, learning is a shared journey—students, teachers, and parents working together to create a thriving community of learners. Our Parent Support program helps families understand and engage with Stevenson’s unique, hands-on approach to education, supporting the growth of the whole child.
When families join Stevenson, they take part in at least 10 hours of Parent Support sessions. These sessions are an essential part of our community model, helping parents connect with the classroom experience and learn how to support learning both at school and at home.
Parent Support is divided into three engaging modules that:
Introduce Stevenson’s mission, vision, and educational philosophy
Build a shared language used by teachers and parents, based on the Responsive Classroom approach
Provide practical tools for working with students in small groups and understanding diverse learning styles
The classes are taught by trained parent volunteers with guidance from teachers and our principal. Sessions are designed to be interactive and fun—using games, discussions, and role plays that make learning meaningful and memorable.
The skills parents learn through Parent Support go far beyond the classroom—they help strengthen communication, empathy, and connection at home, ensuring continuity between what happens in school and family life.
Families also participate in regular classroom meetings and one annual community meeting, each with Parent Support components woven in. Additional opportunities for parent learning are shared throughout the year through the district and community partners.
Stevenson encourages families to continue learning and growing together through community events, book clubs, coffee chats, and workshops. Parents and teachers often share helpful articles, videos, and parenting resources that support our collective growth.
Here are a few favorites from our community:
Responsive Classroom – A teaching and classroom management approach used by all Stevenson teachers (and introduced to parents too)
Challenge Success – A Stanford Graduate School of Education initiative promoting student well-being and engagement
Kid Writing – A literacy framework used primarily in grades K–1 that builds confidence in early writers
Whole Child Education – A network highlighting best practices for nurturing the academic, social, and emotional growth of every child
